Iligan City Waterfalls | Visiting Tinago Falls

Did you know that there are actually three routes to choose when going to Tinago Falls? at least when you are coming from Iligan City. Tinago Falls is sitting at the border of Iligan City and Linamon, Lanao Del Norte in which the river serves as a boundary in the two areas. When visiting Tinago Falls, you can choose between the two main routes – Buru un and Linamon. And for those who prefer the hardest part, they can opt for the third route which is river trekking. Yes, you have to start from the bottom of the river going upstream to the waterfalls.

Which to choose: Buruun or Linamon Route?

There is actually no difference between the distances of travel. Both have almost the same travel time from the habal habal terminal to the Tinago falls. The only difference is the drop off point. At Buruun, the drop off point is along the main road where you need to walk at least 10-15 minutes to the entrance of the waterfalls. Unlike in the other route, the drop off point is the entrance to the waterfalls itself.

The preferred route

For me, I prefer to use the option 1 which is Buruun route. Why?

1st – Because I am from Iligan City and I want to help Habal habal drivers to make use of this opportunity to earn

2nd -The habal habal drivers in Buruun are interconnected with their Habal habal association or whatever they call them. Meaning, the drivers that come and go are recorded so it is at least safe to say that during emergency, they know who to call and who’s driver is in charge with whom. I am actually impressed with their system. Each of the driver/motorcycle unit has an IDNumber/Driver Code.

PS. I don’t want to be bias here. I just want to share what I have learned, because, like everybody else, I been wondering which of the two is better. So it’s your call.

How to go there:

Buruun

  1. From Iligan City Proper, hail a jeepney bound to Buruun. Tell the driver you will stop at the crossing to the Tinago Falls. You’ll know right away when you arrive in the area. There is a Talipapa upon entering to the road.
  2. Ask any of the habal habal drivers that you will be heading to Tinago Falls. 50 PHP fare one way
  3. You will then be drop at the jump off area where you need to walk to the entrance of Tinago falls. Travel Time: 5-10 minutes
  4. You have to take a take the steps going down to the Tinago Falls. Remember: Take your time when going down and hiking up back to the road. Take a rest if need be.

Linamon

  1. From Iligan City Proper, hail a jeepner bound to Buruun. Tell the driver you will go to Tinago Falls using the Linamon route. The driver will then drop you off at the boundary of Buruun and Linamon then you will walk from there to the market where you can find Habal habal that will take you to Tinago Falls.
  2. Ask any of the habal habal drivers that you will be heading to Tinago Falls. 50 PHP fare one way
  3. The driver will then stop right at the entrance of Tinago falls.
  4. You have to take a take the steps going down to the Tinago Falls. Remember: Take your time when going down and hiking up back to the road. Take a rest if need be.

Remember, contract the driver to fetch you after visiting Tinago Falls. You might find it hard to look for habal habal going back to the main road. For the Buruun route, there are habal habal drivers right at the road. The drivers will tell you to hire them instead of having them fetch you back.

And for the third route, this is the trickiest and hardest part. I have yet to experience river trekking to Tinago falls because the last time I was invited to such activity, it was cancelled. But anyhow, the Mindanao Mountaineering Federation Region X, is holding its first activity with a theme: 1st President’s Meeting & Climb | Outreach Program | Tree Planting | River Trek. This is an open event to unite all Mountaineering Clubs within Region X & to discuss necessary matters for the improvement of Mindanao Mountaineering as well as how to nurture our mountains. The area that will be covered are Mt. Agad-Agad and Tinago Falls. Thanks for the event host and organizer – IIT Mountaineers.

The group is also holding a feeding and outreach program: Any means of donation is accepted – Used clothing, slippers and shoes and any amount can really help.
